Wairarapa Homestead

CHRISTOPHER AUBREY (b.1873,d.1902)

Wairarapa Homestead
Watercolour
350 x 580

Details about Aubrey's life have always been sketchy - there is even uncertainty about his first name which may have been Charles. He seems to have painted throughout most of New Zealand, working in Otago and Southland during the 1870s; in 1880 and 1881 he exhibited from Invercargill in the Melbourne International exhibition; he was in Wellington in 1888-9; in Wanganui, Manawatu and Wairarapa areas during the 1890s and in the Auckland area by 1898. His watercolours of towns and country scenery regularly appeared in the New Zealand Graphic from 1898 to 1902. He often decorated these with characterful figures and horsedrawn carriages, as in this painting.
